Informatica Brings Native Integration of Governance Suite to Google Cloud Platform
Informatica recently announced an expanded partnership with Google Cloud, making its Cloud Data Governance and Catalog (CDGC) suite natively accessible on the Google Cloud platform.
Additionally, the CDGC suite is now listed on the Google Cloud Marketplace.
Powered by Informatica's Intelligent Data Management Cloud, an AI-driven platform for integrating and preparing data, the CDGC suite offers tools for governing, classifying, discovering, indexing, and measuring data. By making CDGC natively available on Google Cloud, Informatica aims to simplify integration, improve performance, and enhance security, leveraging Google Cloud’s built-in features. Stephen Catanzano, an analyst at Informa TechTarget, highlighted the benefits of this native availability, including reduced operational complexity and streamlined adoption via the Google Cloud Marketplace.
Informatica, headquartered in Redwood City, California, has long been a leader in data management, providing platforms to prepare data for analytics and AI-driven insights. This enhanced partnership with Google Cloud aligns with Informatica’s focus on advancing analytics and AI by offering accessible tools for data governance and cataloging, thereby fostering greater trust in the data used for developing applications. Informatica has established similar partnerships with AWS and Microsoft Azure, enabling native integrations on those platforms as well.
Using reliable data is critical for developing effective analytics and AI tools. Without trustworthy data, the results of analytics and AI models cannot be relied upon. However, trusted, complete, and accurate data inspires confidence in users, leading to informed decision-making and broader adoption of AI applications.
Tools like data governance frameworks and data catalogs play a vital role in ensuring data trustworthiness. Governance frameworks establish policies for proper data use, while catalogs provide searchable indexes of datasets, reports, dashboards, and AI-powered applications. While beneficial, Informatica’s native integration with Google Cloud is not unique. For instance, Collibra integrates with Snowflake, and Alation has a close partnership with Databricks. However, Kevin Petrie, an analyst at BARC U.S., emphasized that Informatica’s integration fills a critical gap for Google Cloud customers, whose cataloging capabilities lag in areas like connectivity, AI support, and search functionality. Informatica’s strengths in these areas provide a cross-platform solution for managing metadata across cloud and on-premises environments, making this partnership a significant win for both companies.
Petrie also noted that the partnership helps Google Cloud address its customers' need for cross-platform cataloging and gives Informatica access to Google’s extensive user base.
The partnership expansion reflects Informatica’s strategy of ensuring its full suite of data management services is natively integrated with its cloud partners' tools, according to Rik Tamm-Daniels, VP of strategic ecosystems at Informatica. This move not only benefits existing Google Cloud customers but also attracts new users through the Google Cloud Marketplace.
Looking ahead to 2025, Informatica plans to enhance its product suite by incorporating more AI-driven features, such as advanced data lineage capabilities. Petrie suggested that as enterprises increasingly focus on AI development, Informatica should prioritize preparing unstructured data—such as text and images—which now constitutes over 80% of all data. Optimizing unstructured data is critical for training AI models to better understand organizational operations.
Informatica has already demonstrated success in managing and governing structured data, a foundation for analytics initiatives. As enterprises adopt AI, particularly generative AI, the need for tools to govern and deliver unstructured data will grow.
Informatica’s October 2024 blueprints for AI development reflect its commitment to this direction. Catanzano further recommended investments in prebuilt AI models, deeper integrations with Google’s Vertex AI platform, and enhanced automation for data preparation. Expanding self-service AI tools and educational resources could further accelerate AI adoption and development.
